There are precious treasures on Nantucket……material ones in posh art galleries and exclusive dress and jewelry shops.
Me, I like the priceless treasures of a beautiful piece of driftwood, a seal poking his head to say hello, and this trip……a tiny baby rat.
Rat you say? Yes, a teeny baby rat gave me one of the sweetest moments of happiness. He must have been only a couple of weeks old, his eyes just open, exploring his beautiful island. His curious mind took his tiny feet too far from his mama’s nest and he ambled across the seashelled sand in front of me. His excursion tired him out; he softly closed his eyes and fell asleep right at my feet. I resisted the urge to scoop him up in my arms; thoughts of sneaking him aboard the ferry home rambled through my mind. You see, I am mom to two gentle, intelligent mice of my own. This tiny creature, not yet aware of any sense of harm from human hands, felt completely safe to close his eyes and rest his beating heart. And that, in turn stole mine.
But sleeping out in the sunlight during the day is a precarious nap for a teeny one, with all the large shore birds overhead. We gently nudged him awake and guided him back to the thicket where we could see the shadow of his mom running through the dense brush, anxiously watching. He went in, then quickly darted back out again. He must be her wayward child. We again nudged him in, and this time, he stayed in the shelter. Each day I watched for him, but didn’t see him again. I hope he leads a long life of exploration in the sun and shadows. For a moment, he melted my heart in the sunshine and I will always remember my tiny companion, Nantucket rat. His shadow covered my heart with happiness……..♥
