“Both sides of the Protest street”

general's snowI awoke to the news of more monuments taken down in the darkness of night in Baltimore.

All my life I have never fit in…..now, yet again, it seems.

Would I march with the torch wielding white supremacy crowd……..NO

Would I march with the “take them all down” crowd…………………………NO

How does walking by an empty spot of barren ground in a park or library lawn make a poor child’s life better?   How does making history evaporate make anyone’s life better…….now that much of history and english and all subjects have diminished in our childrens’ curriculum nowadays.   And how many of our youth still walk in front of a library these days.

There are those who say………“they belong in National Parks and Museums”………

Some impoverished city kids never get the chance to vacation at a National Park or go to a museum, unless on a class trip……..if they happen to live  within a close bus ride to one.  Sometimes, history is a classroom textbook or a statue on the town square.   Wouldn’t it be nice to add to these memorials…….what about all the brave black soldiers who fought in some of the toughest battles and lost their lives……..How about some monuments to them?

You cannot take these memorials down without hurting the descendants of some who died during these battles.   Not every Southerner lived on a beautiful plantation.   Countless poor, farm boys lost their lives, never owning a slave…….To this day, the military draws many less fortunate than others, hoping to gain education and advancement… it is many among them who never return home.

I live in a historic farmhouse in Gettysburg…….I have always respected history.   How many of our citizens really know the history, except by watching a movie (many times inaccurately told)………

There are those in protest lines who couldn’t even tell you the name of the General in one of those monuments…..Is it the right thing to do to erase what little is known among our youth….many of whom cannot even tell you in which war Gettysburg occurred.

I am on the side of knowledge and respect for those whose lives were lost…………when that line of protest forms……….count me in.   I hope there are still enough of us…………
