“In My End, is My Beginning”

Mary Queen of Scots is born on this December day in 1542. On February 8th. 1587, one of the most historic beheadings occurred, ending a life that rivaled any reality show or soap of current times…… Mary Queen of Scots took her last breath at Fotheringhay Castle, in England…..a place still haunted by  her presence.. When she was just six days old……Mary ascended to the crown of Scotland. What followed was a life of intrigue, murder plots, grief, imprisonment, and so much drama, that this short blog will not attempt to give it justice….. Following Mary’s execution….church bells peeled and bonfires blazed throughout London. In Scotland, grieving nobles executed raids into the English border. In France, the Cathedral of Notre Dame echoed the lamenting chants of mournful monks, while an embargo of English goods was instituted. In Spain, the fire to “destroy” Protestant England was fueled. A life of drama and intrigue ended with equal drama and intrigue. Perhaps most poignant of all, and one of my favorite quotes, was recorded as being Mary’s last words before death. These words were inscribed on a dust laden canopy in a neglected storeroom in Fotheringhay Castle after the execution. The letters in faded gold were this Queen’s final tribute….. “En ma fin est mon commencement.” (Translation: In my end is my beginning.) The reports of the aftermath of Mary’s execution are from the documented words of Henry Gorman. Visitors to Fotheringhay still report sightings of Mary roaming the Castle grounds…….. Stories of my own personal experiences visiting haunted Castles in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland may be read in my book, “The Returning Ones, A Medium’s Memoirs.”  Shirl
