Last night’s episode was an allegory for Sophie’s Choice.
Can a mother make the decision to sacrifice her child to save her others?
The demon was a Pied Piper; his haunted instrument of death a carved human bone sculpted into a flute to lure away the soul.
Evil lured away thousands upon thousands upon thousands into fields, on to trains, to their deaths.
Stretched skin lampshades…….who knows the depth of evil that may have lurked behind the barbed wire of concentration camps……perhaps they indeed were the carved bone flutes of 20th Century evil.
I found my own bone at Sleepy Hollow a couple of years back. It lay across the grave of a 17th Century girl, buried in the Old Dutch Reformed Church Graveyard. Most haunting of all, was the date on her tombstone when I read it……..the very same day I was standing on her grave, looking at a bone……September 9th…..same day, separated by hundreds of years.
Evil repeats, the horrors continue, only separated by centuries.
The nightly news after Sleepy Hollow focused on the tourist attractions centered around this quiet, or not so quiet, village now. I remember what a quaint little sanctuary Sleepy Hollow once was. A place where one could wander by a stream and almost hear the gallop of a distant horseman, not the music of an evil flute.
But today, thousands upon thousands are expected to flock there, to the haunted mazes, the spooky horror houses, complete with the costumed undead.
The world is an evil place, where once quiet villages now disrupt in mob scenes as shrouded family members are carted away to bone yards.
Under equipped medical facilities turn people away, telling family members to leave them alone to die………
How many can make this choice……..to let one die to save the others?
What choices will this earth make, and who will be saved……………….
Below is the bone I found, and the eerie date on her tombstone.
