Today, remembering a teacher who opened up the whole world to her student.
March 3, 1887, a 20 year old girl changed the world…..for one person, and the entire world, as well.
Anne Sullivan opened the world up to Helen Keller; her teaching methods opened the world up to generations of others trapped in worlds of darkness and silence. Helen had lost her sight and hearing after a serious illness when she was a baby. She was 6 when Anne walked into her life. Anne herself, had impaired vision due to an infection.
Thankfully, the ravages of certain diseases have been subdued due to medical knowledge; but our current generation sees another population of those left in the dark, not literally, but in isolated worlds of their own.
Anne’s method of signing has helped these children too, illuminating the outside world for each. With children shuttered in speechless worlds of autism, signing has opened the doorway and brought light into their darkened worlds as well.
So, today, a thank you to Anne……..still a young girl herself, who left a legacy of light. She was a true “Lightworker.” 🙂
