“Liberty’s Light”

Oct 28, 1886:
Statue of Liberty dedicated

The Statue of Liberty has created memorable moments in my life.
I wouldn’t be writing this blog if my grandparents hadn’t crossed an ocean to see her lighted torch. Ellis Island holds their names, one of which is spelled in an Irish way, kind of hard to imagine as my grandma boarded passage from an Italian dock.
But that was the luck of the hand dealt….whether you would pass the health inspection, whether the person overseeing could understand your words enough to get your name spelled right.
I attended Andrea Bocelli’s concert at Ellis Island. The back drop of the Twin Towers glittering in the night sky was beautiful.
I was at the Statue of Liberty the day the Towers fell……the morning sky was blackened by smoke and fire as I watched our world change.
Our country, this Lady, were beacons to look up to……to cross an ocean for…..to change one’s world for…..
May she forever hold her Light up to the sky……

“Inscription on the Statue of Liberty”
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses, yearning to breath free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.
