“Seconds of Shock”

Yesterday, in the supermarket aisle, I was browsing the coffee section. There was a loud explosion, and I my hair, face, and coat were wet. For a few seconds, sheer shock overwhelmed me……
I did not see what happened; I only felt the wetness on my face, I only heard the loud bang nearby. My husband kept saying……”It’s only soda……..and I know I kept answering…..it’s soda?…..it’s soda?”…..A giant bottle of soda exploded next to me….but the experience brought such disturbing seconds to my day. When I got home, my mind began to wander. What if it wasn’t a bottle, but a bullet………what if the wetness wasn’t soda, but blood. Imagine the seconds of shock and terror that came to that school in the 9:00 hour. To me, now, the thought is even more horrific.
When my mother died, a wise family friend came up to my dad and said, people will give you condolences, but they won’t really understand. Only you and your children will understand. And his words were so true. Only we knew the empty house to which we came home. Others left the funeral home and continued their lives, their shopping, their memories……
Us…….
We could never continue as we were……we could never turn the TV off and leave the sorrow….the TV in our hearts and minds had no off switch…..only years of time have dimmed the volume and picture controls…..But never off……grief such as this for these families in Newtown will never be turned off. We can watch the TV, but never really understand…for we can press the remote and leave the Hell…they cannot. They sit with their Christmas trees and waiting presents and bedrooms filled with feetsy pajamas and stuffed animals and live suspended in this Hell…..May they find a way to continue as best they can, and for us, who will never completely understand…….may we find a way to make some good come out of this.
Namaste,
Shirl
