“Fruitcake Gets a Bad Rap”

This blog is for all of us……
You know who you are…….
The ones who sit silently as the fruitcake jokes get passed around……
Today, stand up…..come out of the shadows and proclaim with me…..
I LOVE FRUITCAKE……
I love the tiny, God only knows where they come from, pieces of green and red and bits of citron……(from the citron tree? )……..and the sticky goo that clings to your fingers as you take a bite…….
We keep silent…..we feel shame for liking what so many despise…….
Today there are so many variations, filled with luscious moist dates, and nuts and dried fruits……
But the old and true still holds special place of honor…..
Seeing those plastic containers of citron on my supermarket shelf heralds in Christmas just as much as the first Holiday song piped in the store as I shop……
Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without fruitcake……
So to those of you, and you know who you are….
Make today…..12~12~12……the day Fruitcakes everywhere are liberated and loved……
Mark it on your calendar…..stick a tiny piece of citron on the date….I LOVE FRUITCAKE DAY.
Fruitcake lovers everywhere will thank you……years of shame lifting from their Holiday shoulders……
Namaste,
Shirl
