Oct 22, 1962:
JFK announced the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Many of you who read this, won’t remember that time in history. I was an elementary school kid; we used to have air raid drills. We would huddle under our desks and know that this thin slab of wood above our heads would keep us safe from harm. Looking back, it seems so idiotic. Fleeing to the gym of our neighborhood school would be the answer…..Air Raid symbols were posted on town “shelter sites”…….once you made it there, no radiation could find you……..
Were we all so naive back then……some weren’t I guess…..some built underground shelters in their yards …… a feeble attempt, but better than hiding under a desk.
So many years have passed; are we any less naive. When I see evacuation proposals for NYC…..I cringe. I have driven into the City during rush hour or when there is a major sports event or concert or political visit or even a parade underway….evacuation?…….yeah, right…..
Maybe we are those same kids hiding our heads beneath our desks, like ostriches in the sand……hoping we’ll be safe.
Those of you who have read my blogs know I have seen war up close……close by to the Towers, close by to Yugoslavia…..in those moments of extreme surrealism, thoughts of correct evacuation were about as far away as the dream of world peace. We rely so much on the security teams of our leaders; one imagines how peaceful their dreams might be.
Wishing you and yours safety today…….in a world that seems more and more unsafe with each passing generation…..
