“Chimp Attacks”

It is always so disheartening to read of a chimp attack; this time, a young man who has devoted his life to bringing safety and awareness to this species’ plight lies in serious condition, his body in pain and disfigurement.

Why?  Why did these chimps do it…..to understand this, one would have to understand man.  For man has a violent, darkness inside as well.  Most keep it under wraps, some do not.  The capability of man, with this darkness unleashed, is incomprehensible to most of the human race.

Animals have this darkness, the fight for place among the pack, the violence of gang membership.  Even groups of adolescent dolphins have exhibited this darkness, in violence and gang rapes toward others of their species.

What is the answer…..do we not trust anymore…..do we fear each stranger walking down the street …… inside one of those strangers may be that heart of darkness waiting to be unleashed.

So, for the chimps…….we must be aware.  Aware of the strength, aware of the surroundings, at any given moment.  Just as the woman zookeeper attacked in Europe by the wolves, armed with only radio transmission as her defense, we must now use our higher intelligence to secure safety measures for those of our species who devote their lives to the safety of other beings who share our planet.

Darkness exists, there is wildness in the genes of these beings, there is war and violence among the homelands and origins of many of them.  Some have seen cruelty and been orphaned as babies, who knows what lasting impression has reached into their inner dark regions, waiting for some random, opportune moment to strike against another being at a weakened disadvantage.

We cannot turn our backs on all the innocents because of the darkness of a few….. for we are man, the highest, most empathic race on earth.  As we struggle to understand our own darkness; we must struggle to understand theirs………..

May this attack not further darken the hearts of man toward the primates, but enlighten our hearts and minds to better understand other intelligent minds on earth.

Namaste,

Shirl
