On this eve of the New Year, and all the unknown changes that await; I thought it appropriate to write of one of my favorite little beings…..the Monarch butterfly.
If you have never seen a Monarch’s cocoon, it is a sight to behold……a beautiful jade package dotted with lustrous golden orbs…..as brilliant as the precious metal.
Monarchs lead a life of mystery, a journey that spans their entire existence…..I taught a Catechism lesson about them, to instill the wonder and awe of God’s creation in my little students.
They all learned of the Monarch’s migration to Mexico….where the trees hang heavy, not with leaves, but with this tiny, strong, creation. Then we colored pictures of the little Monarch butterflies in class.
When I was very little, I found a Monarch butterfly on the ground outside a big department store. He let me pick him up in my hands; he was very, very weak and struggling to survive………he had a long journey ahead.
I took him home, my mother made a jar with holes in the lid…..I fed him water, lettuce, the usual things a kid gives to a little being with unknown dietary habits.
He wasn’t eating……I was worried that he would not survive.
That night, I placed him on a Tiger Lily leaf in the garden and left this beautiful, little being out in the darkness of night to face the mysteries, and struggles that awaited…….
The next morning, I ran outside……he was gone.
The little child in me hopes he set forth on his migration; the adult in me realizes the fate that may have befallen him……..
My wish for all those in this New Year is to keep the little child of hope inside…..when the dark, mysterious journey of 2012 awaits………
Blessings for the New Year
